Security cameras: microSD or cloud storage?

Compare access, recurring costs and what happens if you lose the device or connection.

The decision depends on your needs

First consider how long you need to keep recordings and who needs to retrieve them. A solution that works for reviewing a recent event may be insufficient if you want a longer history. Do not assume that live viewing includes video storage.

Local storage

A memory card may avoid the cost of a cloud recording plan if the model supports that feature. Tapo, for example, documents local storage on compatible models, with varying capacities and requirements. Check the exact list of supported cards and whether one is included. If the camera or card is lost, recordings stored only there may also be lost.

Cloud storage

Check the cost per camera, the length of recording history and renewal terms. Find out what happens when a free trial ends and whether a continuous connection is needed to upload events. A device having a mobile app does not mean it includes a remote recording plan.

A useful comparison

Build two first-year budgets: the device plus local storage, and the device plus a paid plan. Then consider which recordings you would retain if the internet failed or the device was lost. Choose according to that scenario, not just the camera's initial price.
