Before buying a Wi-Fi camera

Installation and everyday-use questions to answer before paying.

Check the network at the actual location

Having a router in the same home is not enough. Check the signal at the installation point and consult the model's supported bands. If you cannot check yet, include the possibility of relocating the camera or improving coverage in your budget.

Count every component

Check what is in the box: camera, power supply, cable, mount and accessories. Some systems require a separate hub. Also ask whether a card is needed to store recordings and how the camera will receive power at the chosen location.

Think about daily use

List the actions you need: opening a live view, checking an event, sharing access and receiving notifications. Check which the app offers, which require a plan and whether clear setup documentation is available. Do not confuse a feature advertised for a product family with one included in the exact model.

Before confirming the order

Save the model reference and check the return policy, warranty and support availability. An inexpensive device may become less appealing if installation requires extra purchases or you cannot return it when it turns out to be incompatible with your network.
